Day 5: Boston - New York

View Antje is out of the office. on An.Ke's travel map.

There's really not much to say about today... On Boston Common there was a big rally to legalise marihuana with bands and lots of stands around various related products - which kind of interfered with my plan to enjoy the sun and read for a bit. And then I took the train to NYC which did take quite a while BUT the views were quite nice. Especially arriving in New York when the sun was already setting. The picture didn't turn out great, but it'll do :)

Day 6: Big Apple Greeting

overcast 21 °C

My very first day ever in NYC. In the morning I met with Marguerita, my Big Apple Greeter. She is a real New Yorker and for four hours showed me around the neighbourhoods of Long Island City, Greenpoint and Williamsburg, telling me about their history, showing me places to eat and to shop - a very nice introduction! Afterwards I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge (why do people choose to jog there?) and took the Staten Island ferry. The perfect ending to the day was watching the supermoon lunar eclipse from the High Line. And instead of the typical photo of the Statue of Liberty, I decided to be crazy and feature the lunar eclipse :)

Day 7: NYC - There's too much to see

overcast 24 °C

I am a bit overwhelmed by New York City. There are just so many options of things to do and I've already come to terms with the fact that I'll only see a little fraction - the big limiting factor is not just time but also my feet :)

So I walked the High Line from south to north, then over to the Empire State Building (only to look at it from below) and on to the Grand Central Station and the Chrysler Building where I marveled at the interior. Afterwards I had to get out of the hustle and bustle and took a break on Roosevelt Island and was riding the East River ferry because I couldn't possibly walk any more. In the evening, Isabell, who is staying with me in my dorm, convinced me to go out again to see Times Square at night - and I've got to say that was so spectacular that I even forgot about my aching feet for a while :)

The picture of the day is the view I had from my dinner location at the East River in LIC - not so bad, huh?!

Day 8: Hop on!

overcast 26 °C

I first schlepped myself through Central Park for quite a while in what seemed like slow motion. And then I could not bear it anymore and gave in to the pricey, but oh so tempting offer of a hop-on, hop-off bus, fully with the intention of never hopping off in between :) And that is what I ended up doing most of the day, being chauffeured around the city - such a refreshing change!

I took today's OPAD when doing the night tour included in my newly acquired bus ticket, really making the most of it ;)

Day 9: A turn for the better

rain 24 °C

Today started out being miserable weatherwise, so I did the sensible thing - laundry! And very successfully so: no discoloured clothes even though I washed everything together and after I got things out of the dryer they still looked my size :)

Afterwards I did venture out regardless and first did a guided tour of Grand Central which was quite interesting and dry. And then I rather spontaneously met with the lovely Kristine, a colleague of mine with whom I had only exchanged mails and spoken to on the phone for the past approximately 7 years. Clearly today's highlight!

Since the rain stopped at some point I then decided to use yesterday's (still valid) bus ticket some more, but not before a quick peek into the public library. And that already concludes my visit of NYC as I am off to Philadelphia tomorrow morning.

The picture of the day is the main hall of Grand Central I totally fell in love with:
